How do I narrow down on the right childcare centre for my little one? What are the safety and COVID related measures I need to check for while looking for a centre for my child? Is there any checklist that looks at the basic sets of policies that need to be in place before you choose a preschool for your child? What is more important – a child’s safety or education? These are just some of the many questions, that parents ask themselves and others while starting their search for that ideal space to drop off their little one, while on their way to work or otherwise.

We live in really uncertain times what with the pandemic washing away 2 years of our child’s learning in school. And now, with things slowly turning back to normal, and a horde of daycare centres mushrooming all across the country, how then, can one decide on the one just suited for our little one? And is there a perfect childcare centre anyway?

To make things a little easier for you, we have put together a simple checklist of important points that need to be looked at when choosing the right preschool or childcare centre.

Child Friendly and Child Safe Spaces

Safety and security for any parent is always a top priority and even more so in these times. A childcare centre that assures just that and more are always at the top of the list. And rightly so!

With the CDC putting down guidelines to ensure we stay always protected from the COVID virus, it is even more important for us to ensure that the same measures and more are followed by the centre we finally enroll our little ones in. We need to ask ourselves or rather the centre the following questions?

  • What are the safety measures for children that are in place?
  • What will be the arrival, settling and departure process followed while the child is in school?
  • How will social distancing be maintained amongst children?
  • What is the response mechanism in place to different COVID scenarios?

If a centre leaves no stone unturned when it comes to the safety of the child and has all its processes in place, then half your job is done isn’t it?

The government of India has also set down various strict but necessary standards which look at creating safe and reliable spaces for your child. From the use of child-safe, non-toxic toys and learning equipment, to the stringent yet necessary security policies and procedures in place, to childproofed areas, the list is comprehensive and extremely crucial to ensure safety. A good daycare would hence, also have its own health and safety policies and teams in place, so as to prevent any kind of accident.

An Intellectually Stimulating and Holistic Environment

A daycare centre is much more than just a place where children are supervised. In a time where a lot of emphasis is being laid on Early Childhood Education and in a day and age where parents are very keen to see their children grow into well-rounded individuals, ready to take on the world, creating a space where a child can explore and learn as he grows, is now, the talk of the hour. From well-structured

curriculums, dedicated and supervised learning spaces to trained and qualified staff that can help a child learn concepts through multiple ways, the creating of spaces that are conducive to learning go a long way.

An education, therefore, that looks at all aspects of a child’s development is what is required for any child to grow and learn! This is even more important for children who will be getting back into the learning systems at school after a long break or for the very first time.

Adult to Child Ratios

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the highest standard when it comes to child care and education, centres should have at least 35 square feet of indoor space per child. This gets us to look at adult to child ratios as well. The lower the ratio, the greater the supervision and of course a greater sense of relief for parents. This is of course proportionate also to the age of the child. Smaller children are required to have greater adult supervision as compared to older ones.

Trained Teachers and Staff

Another point to be noted, is the importance of trained teachers. Since your child is going to be spending a lot of her/his time under the care of teachers and daycare staff, it is of utmost importance that the adults that will be looking after them are skilled and trained, not only in the various modes of teaching but also in required safety procedures. From basic first aid training and pediatric CPR, to training in the case of a fire, to COVID safety measures, no stone must be left unturned when it comes to looking after your child.

Trust Your Gut

When you walk into a childcare centre, the first instinct you get about the place is usually right. There is nothing like a mother’s instinct and if you feel that something isn’t right about the place, then it probably isn’t. If, however, on the other hand, the moment you walk into a place you are filled with a sense of warmth and happiness at the way things are run and feel that your child is indeed in safe hands, then it probably is the right place for your little one. Always trust your instincts!

At the end of the day, while there are a lot of factors that go into the making of a perfect daycare, dropping your child to daycare for the first time can sure be overwhelming and while it is a traumatic experience for your little one, it is an equally upsetting one for the parent. This is even more so for children who missed out in going to school or had to take a break from school during these last 20 months of the pandemic.

But once you have decided on a place and are all ready to get your child settled in fast, the sense of relief that you will feel when you pick up your little one after a long, tiring day is something that can never be explained until you actually experience it. And it is this sense of relief that will fill your heart with a great feeling of satisfaction as well that you have chosen well and that now all it will take is time, time for your child to be completely at home there, time to get back to the routine you always wanted, time to realize that you chose well!

To all those mothers and fathers out there who have spent sleepless nights worrying endlessly about finding the right place for their child, hang in there, it’s soon going to be OK!

Teaching and learning – two words that encompass the teacher, child, and parents and their universe today in all its dimensions. Transitioning from one world into another, adapting, upskilling, reinventing, restoring, and retaining has become the fundamental tenet in this journey to evolve as lifelong learners.

The Journey

For our tribe of dedicated teachers, every day provides a new opportunity to learn at a dizzying pace. We are engaged till the wee hours in the morning having eclectic conversations with our content to integrate it seamlessly on the virtual platform. It both exhausts and excites us. Then there is a new facet of general awareness about technology from RAM to Wifi speed to browser for us to learn and ensure we use technology well in the service of our children.

We were at times fearful, unsure, and not so confident of ourselves. World over we took charge and adapted at a lightning speed without anyone noticing our exhaustion and catch in our breath. It was for us to figure out and charter new learning pathways as there were no gazettes, policy guidelines, or research data available to fall back on.

We had to balance integration between traditional classroom practices and new innovative tools for teaching keeping both content and context at the center. Teaching and learning has and always will be a social interaction to foster, build and uphold human connections.

Our Road Map for Tomorrow

Through our spirit of taking on new initiatives with a strong sense of commitment, a positive attitude, and thinking on our feet; we are doing it all and inspiring our young learners. The road map is still not clear as the landscape is getting more complex by the day and we need tools to successfully navigate through this unstable, unknown and unreliable space. There are ongoing challenges on equity where learning is considered, accessibility and affordability being at the core where there is income inequality. The way we think and execute will decide the learning path for education going forward. The focus apart from rote learning now has to shift to capacity building with accountable measures ensuring our child’s wellbeing and holistic development.

This can only happen when we make a collaborative effort to evolve from being restricted to textbook content and to understanding, supporting, and encouraging our children to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. It is about creating and nurturing potential rather than just identifying it.

By supporting the development of resiliency in children and families, our efforts may not be visible now but in the long run, it will enable and empower our children to navigate successfully forward.

If we look back all of us can remember fondly our teachers and mentors who challenged us to look for magic, look for solutions to problems, make the impossible possible, and move forward with greater resolve no matter what the challenges were. For if they were not there to guide us we would not be here doing the same.

Happy Teachers’ day to everyone, to the spirit of teaching and learning!!

A salute to all our mentors and to our ever-growing tribe!

Dr Geeta Mathew – ‘Cheer up, Mom!’

Dear Mom,

Covid 19 turned our worlds topsy turvy. We are hanging in there, amidst virtual schooling, day-care shutdowns and uncertainty, the 2020-21 keywords. Allow joy to break through fear and chaos. Routinize the day so our babies know what to expect. Grab stolen moments – bake goodies, do dance routines, a science experiment. Watch the smile on your child’s face. Allot specific spaces for everyone.

Put up ‘Do not disturb’ signs during work calls. ‘This too shall pass.’ We will soon step out into a better world. So, cheer up, Mom. Tomorrow is another day.

From the Mom of a Mom

Aditi Prakash – ‘Just do it’

Dear Mom,

All moms receive so much advice from other moms, from grand moms, from everyone who thinks they know more and they know better. And on everything. From what to do, how to take care of their child, what to feed them, how to hold them, what to make them wear, and what not to do.

Well, my advice is simple. Be happy. Do things that make you happy. If its food or exercise, reading or dancing, sleeping or watching the telly. Do it. Make time for your happiness.

Even if at the cost of less time with your baby or child. Even if the others at home look at you strangely. Even if it means you eat dinner and then give your child their meal – because that way, you can read or sing or tell them a story without feeling like you are about to starve!

It’s not being selfish. It’s not wrong. No judgement.

Because remember – a happy mom raises a happy baby!

Gudy Narang ‘Just a bend, not the end’

Dear Moms,

Wouldn’t it be a cliché if I ask ‘How are you doing?’ For all the roller-coaster rides we have been through for the past one year. Instead, the right question will be, ‘how did you do it?’

I actually felt relaxed mostly when the sudden lockdown was announced last March. Though clouded with animosity and unpredictability, the new found freedom, it was a fresh round of O2.

With the advent of technology, work from home, work throughout the day, no outing, no meeting of new people, its taxing. But I know we are all fighting a war of a different kind.

The optimist in me asks me to see the green pasture, which is mainly spending time with family and the new found “Working as a Family”.

To all the beautiful Moms out there “Relax Sweetheart It’s just a Bend not the End

Divya Mathew – ‘Everything does not need to be perfect every single day!’

Dear Mom,

Has it been a year already? As a mother of an adorable 9-year-old, I never thought the pandemic would change all our lives so dramatically. A moment ago, I was making elaborate plans of travel and fun stuff to do and the very next moment, I was struggling to balance different tasks all at the same time. Who would have thought that stepping out for an ice cream would be such a rare treat? To top it all, I also had to make sure Zaara was learning right and staying constructively engaged and busy through the long days. But the one thing besides the constant support of my parents and the quiet patience of my husband that keeps me sane, is knowing that everything does not need to be perfect, every single day. It is ok not to tick off all items of your ‘to do’ list.

To all moms out there, we are all doing a fabulous job. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Be patient. Take a deep breath. Carve out some ‘me time’ and remember that this too shall pass!

From one mom to another

Meeta Sajwan – ‘Go for happy, not perfect’

Dear Mothers!

Most women, especially mothers, like the idea of being perfect in every scenario. During these challenging times, I have learnt to “Go for happy not perfect”.

Being a housewife, I look after most of the things at home. My husband tries to step in whenever possible for him.

Following virtual classroom routine was really challenging. I make sure that my son (6+ yrs.) sits with the laptop and his books are arranged on his study table with all the resources required for that day. There are times when he comes up and says “I don’t want to attend the next class”, which is generally non-academic. I do check if he completes the missed class later during the day. He misses being around other students. I try to reassure him “It’s temporary. It’s going to get better”

Most of all I remind myself to focus on positives. Also, self-care is something we all should consider.

***************************

Aditi Prakash –  ‘It’s OK to not be OK’

Dear Mom,

My advice is that it’s ok to cry.

Bringing up a child is a very fulfilling and a joyous journey, but it is an emotional rollercoaster. There will be times when you feel helpless, annoyed, frustrated and exhausted – and at these times it doesn’t make you less of a woman or less of a mother, to break down and cry.

It’s normal.

Here I am using cry as a placeholder for letting out your emotions in your way. Some prefer kickboxing in the gym, writing in their journal, complaining to a mom or a friend for an hour, and so on.

Let it out. Don’t hold it in.

***************************

Jessy Cherian – ‘ It’s ok to be selfish and ensure your happiness’

Dear Mom,

Hope you know you are doing a great job. The last one year hasn’t been easy and the situation is much grimmer now. Just take a long breath or a break if you must. Believe me, this helps. I have a 11-year-old wonderful boy and he has been so accommodating in the last one year. They are going through a lot too and it helps that we give them space and not be on their back always.

I can’t emphasize enough on the benefits of taking care of yourself first. It’s ok to be selfish and ensure your happiness. Do things that relax and make you happy. When you are happy and healthy you can take care of your family better. I lost weight, not on medication anymore for my diabetes and generally am much better health wise. Focus on what you think you need to improve to be the best version of yourself.

Start small and don’t forget to incentivize yourself on achieving what you set out to do. A little online retail therapy has never hurt anyone, has it?

Hang in there moms. This too shall pass.

From one rocking mom to another.

Jessy Cherian, Mom of Adrian

Smriti Raghunandan – ‘Smile, you’re your best cheerleader!’

There’ll be days when the sun is warm and bright, but there’ll be days when you don’t want to get out of bed. And there’ll certainly be days when you cannot keep it all together. On these days, step back, simplify and breathe. Look at yourself in the mirror and smile. Smile because you are your own cheerleader, and the best one there is!

Rachel Lobo – ‘Don’t just survive the present –Thrive!’

Dear Mom,

You’re navigating an unprecedented situation and it’s overwhelming. Call me Captain obvious, but being a mom is tough. Do the best you can, and I can tell you this: “You’re doing enough”.

Over the past year I have learnt to be kind to myself and realized I’m not alone in this! Thanks to my adorable 6- and 2-year-old boys who taught me to cope and adjust. Learn to be happy and a messy mum and you will still be their superhuman. We are in trying times, to say the least so-give yourself a break, make choices and have no guilt, ask for help, slow down. Be every source of entertainment for your child and family, but don’t forget to have time for YOU.

There is no way to perfectly master or balance everything being thrown at us right now, take a breath, momma, and give YOURSELF some grace. Your kids will remember the ways you made it fun. Make memories so you could cherish a lifetime. When you have to pick, because at some point you will, choose a way to connect with your little munchkins-Pick laughing, snuggling, being silly.

There is no secret to be a perfect mother but a gazillion ways to be a damn good one. In the process, there’s a person in there, don’t forget about her. Value your own well-being as this will enable the best version of being a “happy mommy, happy babies”. Don’t just survive the present -Thrive!!

Rachel Lobo, mom of adorable 6- and 2-year-old boys

Sriranjani Hadigal – ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup!’

If there’s one thing I realized in the last year, is ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup!’ As we navigated a tumultuous 2020, this has been my go-to mantra. Self-care has been the most important part of my coping mechanism. For me it was an hour’s workout followed by meditation that helped me keep it together and be there for my toddler son & rest of my family.

It’s a partnership! Raising a happy child, navigating a job change whilst managing caregiving responsibilities wouldn’t have been possible without equal partnership from my husband.

Learn something new! I picked up flower arrangement as a hobby. Apart from the joy of learning, it created positive vibes at different corners at my home.

Aditi Prakash – ‘Every phase passes’

Dear Mom,

I just wanted to say, in the life of a parent, every phase passes.

The fun ones and the happy ones.

The ones when you can’t wait for them to get over.

The ones that leave you questioning your capability as a mother.

When your child is unwell and you feel helpless.

When your heart bursts with pride when you child does something you think is amazing.

When that hug is just what you wanted.

When your child refuses to hug you.

When s/he is refusing to eat or sleep.

When s/he is refusing to wake up for school.

It’s a phase. It shall pass.

As a mother of an almost 10-year-old, I can say, this too shall pass. Enjoy the phases you love and don’t stress too much when the unpleasant phase starts. Because, it’s a phase. It shall pass.

**********************

Shovana Jana – ‘You are not alone’

Dear Moms,

Do you feel you are the only one who wakes up the earliest in your household just to get that 5 minutes of quiet? Do you wonder if your little one rules the home? Do you wonder if you are the only one who for the 50th time during a Teams call puts yourself on mute and doesn’t switch on the video, because there is just too much happening in the background? Do you feel you are the only one whose calls automatically get disconnected because your little one has decided they want to see Peppa pig’s new episode? Well! Let me tell you, you are not alone!

I have found my lost TV remote in the laundry basket, spoons under the couch, my charger in the kitchen and my comb in a colourful box full of lego! These are crazy times indeed and who would have thought we would all have to go through such days. While keeping myself insanely sane during the lockdown was not an easy job, the one thing that made me calm down and take a deep breath was when I saw their smiling faces. It made me forget about my lost sunglasses and all the other things I haven’t been able to do.

Here’s to all the moms who are still searching for their missing pair of slippers!

Cheers!

Shovana Jana, mom of 2 adorably naughty children

Rashi Sodhani – ‘Learning cannot stop’

DEAR MOMS

BEING A MOM IS TOUGH……YES..BUT A MOM IN PANDEMIC IS EVEN MORE TOUGHER…TRUE…

But sooner we accept and start focusing on solutions, the wiser we become. Learning for the children should not be stopped.  Everyone should spend more and more time with your little ones to make them ready for the future. Think of it this way – that this pandemic gives you a chance to spend more time with your kids.

All mommies take charge of the overall development of your children by any means like reach out to experts or teachers, make your doubts clear …but let children grow and learn. Because no pandemic can stop a mother to raise her kids like she wants.

‘The purpose of Parenting is not raising the child, but raising our own self…’

Raising our own self…!!! What could that even be? We are already raised, grown-up adults with a formed mind structure, a pattern of thoughts and hold good enough experience to nurture and raise our children. Then what is it all about?

Well, in the process of growing up we have somewhere succumbed to the conditioning of the outer world, thus losing the real person that we are. For example, society tells us to look a certain way, get a certain kind of job, and achieve some goals by a certain age. These external pressures restrict us from enjoying the smaller joys of life. Raising our own self applies to looking beyond the external and being what we really are.

Surviving in the pandemic

The last one year through the pandemic brought with it huge shifts in our lives, both personally and professionally. This is a known reality to all, that we were pinned by challenges, uncertainties, fears of the known and unknown. Each one has waded through this phase in their own way. Some are still swimming the current, while some have reached the safe edge. What’s important is the kind of feelings, thoughts, and mindsets we are carrying on now.

Related: Coping As A Parent In A Pandemic

Had this year been like an eye-opener to us in terms of restructuring and assimilating certain beliefs about ourselves? This is something one really needs to think through. From a broader spectrum of society, economically and psychologically each person has been in the state of survival against reality. Yet what is that one thing which has guarded the sense of survival… It is the Immunity of the Mind, Body and Soul.

Immunity of the mind

Immunity of body and physical health has been much talked about by many sources, throughout the year. But what about the immunity of the Mind and Soul? These are deeper elements, playing a huge role in the background. The mind by itself a powerful tool, if used with the intensity of channelizing the energy in a mindful way. Having said that, the next situation we are all going to face is about the children returning to the schools virtually and physically (When the Centers reopen)

Unleashing from the hook of experiences

Experiences and learning from Early Years (0-6 years) form the base for 90% of brain development and hence resulting in most of the implanting in the brain. This implanting forms the pattern of our perceptions, thus forming the base for every thought and action. Here’s a real example, “As a child, I was often compared to my brother who was two years older than me. I was told how good he was at studies, and how obedient he was. With repeated comparisons by a few relatives, family members and even the common teachers in school, I developed a strong thought of ‘I am not good enough. Now, this implanted thought processed into my subconscious, and I began to look at every situation with the same lens, that I am not good enough. Fortunately, I was guided by a Psychologist on how I could rework this deeply seeded thought process, which I did, and finally changed it to, ‘I am good enough and I don’t have to be like someone else to prove myself. I love and accept myself. This awareness helped me unleash from the deeply seeded thought process, and everything around me began to change. I began doing things fearlessly, without any self-judgement, This indeed helped me develop my confidence as a mom and also my children, in their growing up years to become more authentic and emotionally balanced.

As a Mindful Parent, this is the first step to effective parenting. It’s about unleashing from the hook of experiences, which may have rooted into the subconscious by now. This is what a Conscious and Mindful Parent needs to be doing so that it doesn’t get passed on to our children.

What we think, how we act/react, our decision-making ability, our problem-solving skill defines our strength/weakness in the perception of our children. At every step, with every voice, we are building something in them. Children are constantly being stimulated through us. Hence the need to vary ourselves.

Building immunity against crisis

  • Building immunity of the mind against certain uncertainties/crisis, needless to say, comes with a chest of questions, fear, doubts and a lot more… While, as an organization, we are prepared for this move, there is much more that needs to be done and undone at home by parents.
  • Build the immunity of the mind by countering the fear and negative self-talk. Replace the same with positive affirmations. This is an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT element in other phases of life as well.
  • As parents, we need to educate children about the practical issues prevailing, yet without giving rise to emotions of fear and anxiety in them. Let them know the reality and not the exaggerated versions of the same.

Also Read: Help Your Children Cope With Stress During COVID-19

  • For more than a year, children have been confined to the four walls, which can create a social anxiety syndrome in them. Keeping this in view, it’s important to let them start being around other children in smaller social bubbles.
  • As a family, let’s prepare children for the ‘new normal, by following the protocols of physical and mental fitness. So, good family time can be spent around Yoga, exercises, playing a sport, meditation, breathing exercises, eating a balanced meal, etc.

Unconsciously we have been passing our fears and anxieties to our children. Our worries related to job, business, career or even relationships has been playing on them. Without much effort, we have somewhere made them a part of these temporary hurdles. It’s time, we accept and start believing that these situations would not be there forever, but what we leave in our children will definitely remain forever.

As responsible and caring parents, we have been cautious of the physical health of children. Now it’s time to nurture their mental well-being too, of course, this has to be done mindfully and consciously.

HAPPY AND MINDFUL PARENTING!

There is something magical about the summer holidays for it opens up infinite possibilities of fun and exciting things to do. Summers mean happy times, days for playing around, for splashing in the water, for making sandcastles on the beach, or just sleeping in. It is all about getting tanned, reading for hours, the smell of rain kissed sand, trying new things and making new friends. A perfect break for children to let their hair down and for families to bond, summer holidays are the best days of the year aren’t they?

The last 1 year has dampened our spirits and put a pause to all our plans. What would have been an exciting summer camp outdoors with a whole lot of sunshine and play, are nowadays restricted to the four walls of our house? But does staying indoors mean children can’t have fun?

While the year has gone by and the months to come are nothing what we ever imagined, it would be only right to say that it did open up for us new avenues through which we have tried to bring back a sense of normalcy into our lives. Children thrive on routine and structure and while we can’t give them the summers that they are always used to, we can, however, in our own little ways keep them constructively engaged and happy. After all, it is also important to continue to give our little ones a structured summer break that will ignite their imagination and creativity while making sure they unwind and have loads of fun.

One such activity spread across the entire month of May and ideal for children between the ages of 3 and 10 years, is Camp KLAY, a summer camp by KLAY Preschools and Daycare.
